Map Your USB Drive as an External Drive on Your NAS

First hook up your external USB HDD to your PC, hook up the power and make sure that its visible from your computer. Next we’re going to mount it from the NAS so that we can start syncing files to it.

On your PC, we’re going to want to share the external drive. Right click on the USB drive in windows explorer and select properties.

Next, select the Sharing tab and click the share button. Share this drive as extbackup

Now we’re going to mount this drive from the NAS. Synology’s directions are here. If you’re on Windows, use the CIFS file mount instructions.

Mount the USB drive inside your home directory as extbackup. Use the IP address of your PC on your network as the remote server and extbackup for the remote folder path (i.e. 192.168.1.101:/extbackup). Map this to /extbackup. You should have something like this:
